Coyotes feeding on pets, prompting fear among humans

An anonymous caller to the Hi-Desert Star last week said when coyotes attacked her dogs, who were running loose near their house in Yucca Valley, animal control and state Fish and Wildlife workers both told her there were more coyotes than ever in the area.

She said she was advised to shoot them, as long as it was in a legal area for firearms.

Coyote encounters with pets are more common in urban and suburban neighborhoods, but can happen anywhere, according to Kyle Orr, a spokesman for the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“They’re an opportunistic predator. It’s frankly not abnormal behavior,” Orr said this week.

Encounters are more frequent in more populated areas, he said.<<<Read More>>>
